RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS
IN GREECE
Greece was one of the first Christian centers
and there are many temples and monuments of the Greek orthodox Christianity,
each of which is an integral piece of the national heritage, and
that attracts many visitors from all over the world.
The churches from the PaleoChristian, Byzantine or Meta Byzantine
period with the impressive decorations, the mosaics, the frescoes,
the rear icons and the religious relics, are
evidence of the fast growing Christianity during those periods.
We must mention the monasteries that are located all over Greece,
which were important aspects for spreading Christianity, as well
as preserving the Greek language, literature and art.
More specifically, during the Ottoman occupation of Greece, it was
people from the church that created secret schools where the literature
and the spirit of freedom was taught. The monasteries gave refuge
to people from all over Greece that were fleeing the Turkish occupied
areas, and also gave them land to cultivate in order that they can
live by its products.
A great example of the monasteries is the monasteries of Athos and
Meteora that were declared monuments of International cultural heritage.
All over Greece visitors will have the chance to admire Byzantine
Basilicas and Paleo Christian churches that are built on top of
ancient temples, coexisting with cultures and religions of ancient
times and civilizations.
A very interesting part of the Religious tourism are the ecclesiastic
museums that many churches and monasteries have founded at their
premises, electing the strong connection of the religious faith
with art and also the important role that the church played in the
history of Greece. |
